In a significant shift within the Australian financial landscape, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly turning to non-bank lenders to meet their financing needs.
Recent data reveals that demand for non-bank lending among SMEs has reached a record high of 47%, marking a 50% year-on-year increase and a threefold rise since September 2018.

The latest SME Growth Index by ScotPac, Australia's leading non-bank business lender, highlights this trend. The report indicates that 60% of SMEs plan to invest in their business in the next six months, up from 55% in March 2022. Notably, SMEs experiencing declining growth are more likely to seek out non-bank lenders, with almost 90% of this category turning away from traditional banks.

Despite the sustained growth in non-bank lending preference, 10% of SMEs remain uncertain about how they will finance new business investments. This uncertainty presents an opportunity for non-bank lenders to further expand their market share by addressing the specific needs and concerns of these businesses.

The appeal of non-bank lenders lies in their ability to offer faster credit decisions and more flexible lending solutions compared to traditional banks. This agility is particularly beneficial for SMEs seeking smaller loan amounts or those requiring quick access to funds to capitalise on growth opportunities.

As the financial landscape continues to evolve, it is essential for SMEs to explore all available financing options. Non-bank lenders are increasingly becoming a viable and attractive alternative, offering tailored solutions that align with the unique needs and challenges faced by small businesses in Australia.
