The Australian Finance Industry Association (AFIA) has announced a partnership with the Australian government to provide support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) impacted by global fuel market disruptions.
This collaboration aims to address the financial challenges faced by businesses due to rising fuel costs and supply chain issues.

AFIA members, including bank, non-bank, and specialist SME lenders, have reported that certain sectors—particularly transport, agriculture, construction, and regional supply chains—are experiencing financial stress due to fuel supply constraints and rising costs. AFIA CEO Diane Tate emphasized the importance of early communication between SMEs and their lenders to discuss operational and financial circumstances.

The partnership includes coordinated actions such as temporary reductions in fuel excise and the heavy vehicle road user charge, alongside broader fuel security and supply chain interventions. These measures are designed to provide immediate relief to affected businesses and ensure the continuity of critical sectors within the economy.

SMEs are encouraged to proactively engage with their lenders to explore tailored financial solutions during this period of disruption. By working collaboratively with financial institutions and government bodies, SMEs can navigate the challenges posed by the fuel crisis and maintain business resilience.
